About Luke
Luke Shamblin’s musical journey began in October 2001 with the inheritance of his late grandfather Bob Summers’ fiddle. After restoring the instrument, he began playing in January 2002 and soon discovered a deep passion for the mandolin, often joking that he had to mow a lot of lawns to afford his first one in July of that same year. Under the mentorship of West Virginia bluegrass legend and West Virginia Music Hall of Fame inductee Buddy Griffin at Glenville State College’s Bluegrass program, Luke developed his skills and began performing with local and regional bands. This path led to his professional debut in November 2007 with bluegrass legend and IBMA Hall of Fame inductee Melvin Goins.
Luke performed with Goins until the summer of 2008, when rising fuel costs led to a downsizing of the band. Just before graduating from Glenville State College in December 2010, he was offered a full-time role as mandolin player with Melvin Goins and Windy Mountain, a position he held for three years. During that time, he also had the opportunity to share the stage with bluegrass greats such as Jesse McReynolds, Everett Lilly, Ronnie Reno, Doug Dillard, and many others.
While still performing with Goins, Luke recorded two solo projects: Timing’s Everything in 2011 at Tom T. Hall’s Fox Hollow studio, and Higher Ground in 2012 at ShayJack Studios in Ashland, Kentucky. These recordings feature collaborations with notable artists including Jesse McReynolds, Buddy Spicher, Don Rigsby, Chris Jones, Jon Weisberger, Buddy Griffin, Corey Hensley, Jack Hicks, as well as Suzanne Cox, Tatianna Hargreaves, Ginny Hawker, and Kay Justice.
A skilled multi-instrumentalist, Luke is also a composer and songwriter whose work reflects his deep roots in bluegrass tradition while embracing a personal and evolving artistic voice. Over the past decade, he has continued to perform as a fill-in musician across West Virginia and North Carolina while also furthering his education, earning a Master’s degree in Education in 2015 and coaching college softball until 2024.
Today, Luke is focusing on a new chapter that blends his professional and creative pursuits. Working remotely as a Higher Education professional, he is channeling his energy into writing, recording, and performing original music, leading his band Luke & the Cool Hands, and appearing in select solo and duet performances.
